When answering part 3 questions it is important to discuss topics in detail. The examiner is looking for you to be able to talk about something that is not yourself and as familiar to you.
Example Questions and Answers
Is climate change a serious threat to the world?
Example Answer 1
“Having reviewed some of the evidence briefly, I think that it is a serious threat to the world. With carbon emissions rising steadily, and deforestation continuing to happen on a massive scale, only time will be able to reveal the full extent of the threat. “
If so, what ought to be done to curb such a threat?
Example Answer 1
“This is the million-dollar question, right? It's imperative that renewable energy becomes cheaper and widely available, that's the most important task. But secondly, an international agreement such as the 2015 Paris Agreement needs to be not only ratified but enforced on a global scale. Oh, and lastly, Sequestration projects ought to be launched globally and on a massive level. This will help mitigate emissions until countries can convert to clean energy. “
Who plays a larger role in curbing emissions: government or individuals?
Example Answer 1
“By far governments play a larger role. Individuals only have the ability to take necessary steps on a small scale, whereas governments can enforce the vast majority of people and governments to comply with measures. Just of the top of my head, governments can implement a cap and trade system, or an incentive-based system to help keep air pollution and carbon emissions to a minimum.”
Why is climate change such a controversial topic?
Example Answer 1
“This question all depends on who you talk with. For some people, it's not contentious, but for others it boils down to whether they believe the scientific community. For this second group, a lot of these people tend to be in the business community and these added regulations would hurt their profit margins. And to be honest, I understand where they're coming from. It's a difficult balance between producing a profit and maintaining a quality environment. But that's the heart of the issue.”
