When answering part 3 questions make sure to support your answers with reasons. If the examiner asks about a question and the candidate only answers with a yes or not, the examiner will not be able to properly judge the candidate’s English ability.

Example Questions and Answers

In your country, are video games popular among adolescents?

Example Answer 1

“Well actually it depends on who you talk with. I would say children from the cities are more prone to play video games, while kids from the countryside are less likely to play online games. It’s really up to the individual, but for the most part, a majority of kids play video games often in my country.”

Is there a problem of violence among adolescents where you are from?

Example Answer 1

“There is, in fact, a problem with teenagers lashing out in schools, and it's been gaining national attention in recent years. Although it's difficult to say if these attitudes are new or are just being exposed more because of the news. What is clear though is there needs to be a nuanced debate about whether this is a serious issue or just a fantasy that is encourage by the media.”

Do you think video games have a negative effect towards children?

Example Answer 1

“Without a doubt! There is extensive research out there about how children who spend a significant amount of time playing videos, develop anti-social behaviors and tend to be overweight. Plus, it takes away from time being spent outside playing and exploring with one’s imagination. That's the real downfall of video games, it takes away from kids’ creativity.”

What are your thoughts on video games supposedly causing children to become violent?

Example Answer 1

“To be honest, I don't know what psychologists have said about this topic, but in my own opinion, I think video games provoke children to behave in a hostile manner. There are probably other factors such as parenting, but video games encourage aggressive behavior. There needs to be a coherent effect by authorities to educate children on the differences between the real and virtual world, which can often become blurred and confusing for young adults.”
