Tips & Examples

On the IELTS exam it's okay to lie. The examiner doesn't know you and doesn't know if what you say is true or false. Most people have boring, generic families and those can be difficult to discuss at a high level. In this case, you can choose to either lie or speak in the negative tense to hit the higher-level vocabulary and grammar points.

Lie: "I have a dysfunctional family."

Negative Tense: "My family isn't dysfunctional."
