The introduction is the first paragraph of your IELTS task 2 essay. You must include an introduction in this essay to receive full points.

For this course, candidates will use a 3-part structure and the introduction will include:
1. Introduce the topic
2. Focus on the question
3. Thesis statement/preview the essay

An introductions purpose is to let the reader know what the subject is and where it’s going. Don’t over think this part. Make the topic and direction of the paper clear and you will have a good introduction.

Look at the Introduction below. Can you find where they do each 3 steps?

Question: “Education is not a luxury, but a basic human right and as such should be free for everyone irrespective of personal wealth.
Do you agree or disagree?"

Introduction:
In today’s world education has become the subject of much heated debate. Some people believe that education is a human right and should be provided for free, while others believe education is a luxury that should be paid for. In my opinion, education should not be given for free as it is a luxury that should be purchased. In this essay I will support my answer with additional points.

Introducing the topic is the first part of your introduction. For this class, you will be given templates to follow. In these templates, you will insert the topic of the question. Look at the following:

In today’s polarizing atmosphere, most topics are debated intensely, with ______________ being no exception.
In today’s world ______________ has become the subject of much discussion.

Write topic sentences for the following task 2 questions.

“Some people believe the aim of university education is to help graduates get better jobs. Others believe there are much wider benefits of university education for both individuals and society.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.”

“Global warming is one of the most serious issues that the world is facing today. What are the causes of global warming and what measures can governments and individuals take to tackle the issue?”

For this course, candidates will use a 3-part structure and the introduction will include:
1. Introduce the topic
2. Focus on the question
3. Thesis statement/preview the essay
Again, you are provided with templates to help organize your thoughts.
Amidst the discourse regarding _____________, some contend that ________________, at the same time others claim that _________________.
Putting it together. Using the previous questions write sentences focusing on the question.

“Some people believe the aim of university education is to help graduates get better jobs. Others believe there are much wider benefits of university education for both individuals and society.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.”

“Global warming is one of the most serious issues that the world is facing today. What are the causes of global warming and what measures can governments and individuals take to tackle the issue?”

The thesis is the most important part of your introduction. It states your overall idea and overall, it answers the question being asked. In order to make a strong thesis you need to be clear and to the point.

Again, we will be using a template to help us.
This essay will state that _____________ due to the points ranging from Body Paragraph 1 to Body Paragraph 2.
Continue putting it together. Now create thesis statements for the following.

Amidst the discourse regarding higher education, some contend that a degree helps further people's careers, at the same time other claim that it also benefits societies. This essay will state that a university education provides benefits for both individuals and societies.

Example 2:

Global warming is one of the most serious issues that the world is facing today. What are the causes of global warming and what measures can governments and individuals take to tackle the issue?

In today's world, global warming has become the subject of much discussion. The world is becoming warmer and governments and people need to take action. This essay will state the actions both parties can take to combat the future threat.
