Tips & Examples

The conclusion is the last thing you will write in your task 2 essays. It is the part that summarized your opinion and brings the essay to a close. In the conclusion, you will need to include 3 things.

1. Restate the thesis statement
2. Restate the main points
3. Give a predication or suggestion

The first part of a conclusion is restating the thesis statement. It is important that you do not copy the thesis word for word. You will need to paraphrase the thesis and use skills like synonyms that you learned in last class. Here is an example of a good thesis and its rewritten counterpart in the conclusion.

Thesis: “Both governments and individuals have a duty to find ways to overcome these problems.”
Restated Thesis: “In conclusion, both state run institutions and its citizens must figure out how to solve these issues.”

After you have restated the thesis you will restate your main points. This is done in a similar way to your thesis statement. Try to paraphrase the main points when possible. Look at the example below:
Thesis: “Both governments and individuals have a duty to find ways to overcome these problems.”
Main points:
1. Governments have a responsibility to keep its citizens happy.
2. Individuals must respect the government for what it provides its citizens.
Restated Thesis: “In conclusion, both state run institutions and its citizens must figure out how to solve these issues.”
Restated main points: Governments must provide its citizens a good well-being and the citizen must appreciate what the government gives them.

Part 2: Make a suggestion or prediction
After you have restated your thesis and main points you will wrap things up by making a suggestion of a prediction. Look at the example below.
Thesis: Both governments and individuals have a duty to find ways to overcome these problems.
Main points:
1. Governments have a responsibility to keep its citizens happy.
2. Individuals must respect the government for what it provides its citizens.
Restated Thesis: “In conclusion, both state run institutions and its citizens must figure out how to solve these issues.”
Restated main points: “Governments must provide its citizens a good well-being and the citizen must appreciate what the government gives them.”
Suggestion or prediction: “In order to be successful, governments should increase communication with the people it serves.”
Your completed conclusion will look like this.
“In conclusion, both state run institutions and its citizens must figure out how to solve these issues. Governments must provide its citizens a good well-being and the citizen must appreciate what the government gives them. In order to be successful, governments should increase communication with the people it serves.”
