In some countries a rise of manufacturing has led to an increase in employment and other benefits. However, it has also contributed to severe air, water and ground pollution. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages with regard to manufacturing and the environment?

Manufacturing has invariably been a fundamental aspect of every society. However, as the advancement of humanity progresses, the need to improve environmental conditions has persisted, urging some to propose that manufacturing ought to be cut from certain areas of society. Overall, this essay will unconditionally agree that environmental concerns take precedent on the grounds that they are crucial for the survival of life and often products that are currently manufactured are frivolous material goods with little to no practical value towards survival.

The production of goods can often be a business that has significant impact on the local environment, both social and natural. While it is true that some employment is generated from these enterprises, it often comes at the expense of the natural ecosystem around that manufacturing hub. It’s nearly impossible to generalize on the causes behind this as each individual case is subjected to different circumstances, however, with the majority of the cases the results are frequently the same. Water, air, and ground pollution invariably arise from such activity and the added jobs do not compensate for the long-term environmental consequences that contaminate the surrounding areas.

The types of products that are manufactured are a majority of these plants need to be included in the equations when evaluating this problem, and with the modern consumer driven economy, most goods fall under the category of “wants”. This separation from “wants” and “need” is an important issue because it highlights what is necessary for the survival versus what we desire. If the ecosystem around these plants is suffering long-term consequences for the production of meaningless goods, it’s not worth the degradation of the land and air for the consumption of frivolous possessions.

With all things considered, the most promising result for rectifying the issue of manufacturing is to put the environment first, and jobs second. The preponderance of evidence ranging from the long-term degradation of the ecosystem to the overproduction of frivolous goods highlights the clear need to implement such an effective measure. In light of the argument laid out above, it is hoped that this discussion moves into the public realm in order to progress the movement forward.
