Task 1: Process

Interactive Lesson

Tips & Examples

With processes, the candidates will be asked to describe some kind of process. With this type of task, it is important that the candidate correctly sequence the information presented.

Example 1:

The process highlights formation of sedimentary rock.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Answer: The process demonstrates how sedimentary rocks are formed over the course of time. Overall, as is shown in the illustration, this progression entails five stages beginning on land, and ending in the sea.

The start of this process occurs on land, more specifically mountains, hills, and other land features, in which weathering and erosion takes place on these land structures. After this weathering process, material from these mountains are moved into the sea by nature forces such as wind, and eventually the byproducts of the mountains drop deep into the sea.

At the same time as the erosion of resources and ultimate fall into the ocean, animals and plants die and their waste forms layers of sediment on the bottom on the ocean floor. Over the course of time, these layers are pushed further and further down, and in due course, forming sedimentary rock at the foundation of the sea.
