When writing about pie charts the candidate should start with the biggest portion (or group of portions) Then make their way to the smaller portions. If there are two charts the candidate can decide to compare proportions in their paragraphs or compare pie charts in each paragraph.
Example 1:
The pie charts below highlight the difference of market share in phone sales in the years 2000 and 2010.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Answer: The charts illustrate the variation in the share of sales of phones in the years 2000 and 2010. Overall, Apple and Samsung increased their market shares considerably, while Blackberry and HP lost a substantial amount during the same time frame.
According to the first chart, in 2000 Blackberry and HP had the largest share of phones sales with over 1/3 for the former and around 27% for the latter. Following these companies, were Jitterbug and Samsung with both at approximately 15%. The lowest market share holders were Apple and EcoLife with the two firms under 5%.
However, with regards to the second chart, Apple and Samsung had experienced the most development between 2000 and 2010, with 2010 market shares being at 35% and almost 1/3 respectively. Alternatively, Jitterbug and HP both lost shares of phone sales ending in 2010 with 12% each. The single largest drop was witnessed by Blackberry ending in 2010 with fewer than 5%, which is slightly lower than EcoLife at roughly 7%.
