When writing about pie charts the candidate will be comparing proportions or writing about proportional change over time. Again, the use of comparatives and superlatives is essential for a good score.
Example 1:
Title: The graphs below highlight the top exports of China and the United Kingdom in 2011.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Answer: The graphs demonstrate the United Kingdom’s and China’s most lucrative exports in 2011. Overall, China exported more technology and textiles than the UK, while, at the same time, the UK sold a higher amount abroad of food and automobiles.
With regards to Chinese exports, the country’s highest commodity sold abroad was that of technology with sales of $46 million. Trailing behind was textiles, which exported $35 million to countries around the world. Rounding out the top Chinese commodities sold aboard are Automobiles and food, with sales of $17 million for the latter and $12 million for the former.
With exports pertaining to the UK, their top product sold overseas was that of food, with total sales at nearly $40 million. Following food, are exports of automobiles with around $25 million sold worldwide. Finishing the United Kingdom’s top products sold are technology and textiles, with $16 and $11 million sold respectively on the international stage.
