About Body Paragraphs

Candidates can have one or two body paragraphs. It is important for the coherence and cohesion score that the candidate group the information in a logical order. If there are two graphs the candidate can use one paragraph for each graph or compare relevant information in each paragraph.

Example 1:

Title: This graph shows the number of CDs bought at three music stores between 1990 and 2015. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Answer: The graph highlights the quantity of CD’s purchased from 1990 to 2015 at three different music shops. Overall, the amount of CD’s acquired from New Age and Westside Music fell between 1990 and 2015, whereas Retro music’s sale of CD’s rose throughout the time frame given.

At the start of the period, New Age and Westside sold roughly 150 and 200 CD’s respectively. Over the following five years, those numbers climbed to a high for each company at around 190 for New Age and in the region of 210 for Westside. Although the amount of CD’s purchased at New Age leveled off from 1995 to 2000, both companies experienced a downward trend of sales from 2000 to 2015 ending the period significantly below their starting point, with New Age selling roughly 125 and Westside’s customers purchasing slightly over 150 CD’s.

On the other hand, CD’s purchased at Retro Music rose steadily starting in 1990 at approximately 110 to over 160 in 2005. Thereafter, they climbed at an accelerated pace from 2005 to 2010 to hit 200 CD’s sold in 2010. However, over the next five years the number of CD’s bought slowed, ending the period slightly over 200.
