Tips & Examples

Mastering the comparative and superlative is essential to getting a good score when talking about bar graphs. The candidate is continually expected to compare and contrast data and needs to be efficient in the process.

Example 1:

Title: The graph below highlights the percentage of men (blue) and women (red) who purchase gold based on age. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Answer: The graph demonstrates the age distribution of those who buy gold separated by gender. Overall, it is clear that as men get older, they buy more gold, while women are most likely to purchase gold between the ages of 31 and 40.

With concerns to males, they purchase the least amount of gold when they are younger, at fewer than five percent. However, as they get older, that proportion increases, specifically to 20 and 30 percent between the ages of 31 and 40, and 41 and 50 respectively. Yet, men are most likely to buy gold when they are 60 and older, with that portion being over 45 percent.

With respect to women, they purchase gold at a significantly higher rate than men at the youngest age interval, with slightly more than 25 percent. That female rate nearly doubles to over 45 percent between the ages of 31 and 40, the time when they have the highest chance of purchasing gold. Unlike men, as females ages they are less likely to buy gold, with a rate of 20 percent during the 41 and 50 ages, and less than 10 percent when they reach 60 and older.
