Tips & Examples
When writing about a bar graph the candidate will either compare the relevant date or write about the change over time. The candidate must first analyze the graph and decide what he or she will be writing about.
Example 1:
Title: The graph below shows the number of traffic accidents in four countries in three separate years. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Answer: The graph depicts traffic calamities in 2000, 2005, and 2010 in four different nations. Overall, India, France, and Japan all reduced the quantity of traffic accidents in their countries, while the number in Australia rose dramatically over the period.
At the start of the period, India by far had the highest number of traffic related incidents with over 45000 in 2000, whereas France and Japan had slightly below 30,000 for the former and approximately 35,000 for the latter. All three countries experienced a significant drop in traffic calamities with France witnessing the most severe fall with slightly over 20,000 in 2005 and finishing in the region of 10,000 in 2010. In comparison, India and Japan only experienced a moderate fall of traffic crashes, with India gradually decreasing by roughly 5,000 accidents in both 2005 and in 2010, concluding with around 35,000 accidents. On the contrary, Japan had a slight drop in 2005 of about 3,000, before ultimately ending at nearly 25,000.
On the other hand, Australia nearly doubled the amount of traffic calamities during the period. In 2000 they experienced relatively few accidents with fewer than 15,000 before climbing the following five years to around 20,000. They finished the period with nearly 30,000 traffic calamities.
