Obesity rates have been rising in many places around the world. Some argue that government should be doing more to combat this issue, while others contend it’s an individual’s problem. Discuss ways in which both individuals and government can reduce this problem.

In the contemporary world, the myriad use of technology has expanded the ability of people to identify problems from around the globe. One of the topics that are constantly discussed is that of obesity. While this is not a particularly new problem for modern society, experts have debated and enacted a wide array of policies, with some being more successful than others. This essay will detail two strategies that help combat this issue of obesity, precisely focusing on how the government can regulate food products and how individuals can make smalls steps in their fight against obesity.

The government has a mandate in helping set structures to improve the lives of their citizenry, and regulation of food is essential to that mandate. While some people will always have poor diets, many citizens want to choose the healthy lifestyle. One of the most effective ways of implementing such a measure would be to tax foods that use preservatives, at the same time as increasing subsidies for natural foods like fruits and vegetables. When purchasing food at the grocery store, more people analyze which foods to buy on price, and if that price is lower for natural foods than goods with preservatives. This will contribute in people consuming healthier foods.

The government does contribute significantly in helping managing obesity, however, the decisions that individuals make in their day to day lives is the largest determinant in controlling this problem. One of the easiest means people can take is to use public transportation instead of driving. By using the public transportation system, citizens must walk to their destinations more than by simply driving. This increased activity will be small, but performed on a daily basis it will lower obesity rates among the larger society.

With all things considered, two solutions that would help fix an obesity issue is using the government to increase prices of foods with preservatives, while at the same time as, individuals choosing to use public transportation instead of driving. It is imperative that both of these talking points are including in any discussion surrounding the idea voter turnout in future societal deliberations.
