Develop Skills for Completing Notes, Forms, and Tables
Completing notes, forms, and tables is a very common task in the IELTS Listening test. These questions require you to fill in missing information, which usually appears on the audio in the same order as it's presented on the page. This predictable order is a significant advantage, as it helps you follow the recording without getting lost.
Key Strategies for Success
Read and Predict: Before the audio begins, carefully read the entire form, table, or set of notes. Pay attention to the headings and labels to understand the context. As you read, predict the type of information needed for each blank, such as a name, a number, a date, or a location.
Follow the Order: The information you need to fill in will almost always be presented sequentially in the recording. For example, if the form asks for a name, then an address, and then a phone number, you'll hear the speaker provide the information in that same order. Use the pre-reading time to get a sense of this flow.
Accuracy is Crucial: Pay close attention to details, as even small errors can lead to a wrong answer.
Spelling: Your spelling must be correct. If you're unsure of a spelling, a good strategy is to write down the word phonetically first and then correct it if you can.
Numbers: Listen carefully to numbers. A number like 13 can sound very similar to 30. Similarly, listen for the difference between a hundred and a thousand.
Dates: Be precise with dates and how they are said. For example, "1st April" in the audio might be written as "April 1" on the form. Be prepared for different formats.
By combining the skill of anticipating answers with a careful focus on spelling and number accuracy, you can master this important task. The organized format of these questions makes them a good opportunity to score points, so practice them well.
